À propos de la chanson

Ben E. King a composé "Stand by Me" en 1960, initialement pour The Drifters, mais le groupe a refusé de l'enregistrer. Profitant d'une session studio supplémentaire, King a présenté la chanson à Jerry Leiber et Mike Stoller, qui ont décidé de la produire eux-mêmes. Le titre s'inspire d'un gospel de 1905, "Lord Stand by Me", écrit par le révérend Charles Albert Tindley.
