À propos de la chanson

David Bowie a écrit "Starman" en réponse à la demande de Dennis Katz, directeur de RCA Records, qui souhaitait un single plus commercial pour l'album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". Bowie a composé la chanson en une seule session au début de 1972, remplaçant ainsi "Round and Round" de Chuck Berry sur l'album.
